Girl Crush: Nicole LaLiberte

If you follow me on Twitter you would have seen that over the past month or so I managed to get completely hooked on U.S. TV series, Dexter. Like every other hot blooded female that watches Dexter I developed an intense crush on Detective Joey Quinn, but it wasn't until Season 7 I found my own style crush. Nicole LaLiberte, as well as having the most beautiful surname in the world, managed to grab my attention with her big doughy eyes and freckled face hidden under a messy full fringe playing the minor role of drug addict, Arlene Schram, in Season 7 of Dexter (top right picture). She instantly reminded me of a late 60's/early 70's groupie girl. Particularly, simply because of her fiery locks, Pam Courson, whom is another huge style inspiration to me.

I picked up on her because she has similar features to myself concerning hair colouring, skin tone and freckles, but she's just generally 1000x more awesome and beautiful. There are times when I consider ditching my ginger locks in favour of being blonde, but then I discover a red-headed beauty like Nicole and wonder why I would ever want to get rid of it. Strangely, there's not much information available about her online, but in all that I did discover she has a wonderful sense of effortlessly, laid back sense of style that I would love to be able to emulate as well as her.

If I suddenly went blind, would you still look into my eyes?

Jacket*: c/o Mary Jane Fashion // Dress: Urban Outfitters Sale, £15 (inc. staff discount) // Headband: Accessorise (old) // Boots: Topshop, £75

How beautiful is this contrast khaki sleeve jacket that Mary Jane Fashion kindly sent over. I've been a fan of the contrast sleeve for a while. For years, I've been lusting over a £2000 leather, contrast sleeve, classic Burberry trench but unfortunately I don't ever see myself having that many pennies to spare on a coat. This little number however fulfills my need contrast-sleeve needs in the meantime. What's even better is that it's under £40, a whole £1960 cheaper than my Burberry pipe dream! For such a cheap price, it's unbelievable how expensive it looks and feels. It could easily be mistaken for part of Zara's luxury collection. Needless to say, I will not be taking it off for quite some time!

I wore this little concoction of garments to a date the other night. I picked up the dress in the post-Christmas sale. I love the lightweight fabric and everyone knows I'm a fan of the smock shape. The colour of it is gorgeous too! I'm slowly warming to the colour red more and more now my hair is a little lighter and does not clash horribly with it. A year and a half down the line, my Topshop Allegra boots are still my "go to" shoes. I'm so glad I made the investment into them because they are easily the comfiest heels I own. I even love how scuffed and distressed they look from my constant wear.

I'm making the most of my time before returning to university on Monday. For example, last night my housemates and me decided to build a fort in our hallway, drink wine, eat my One Direction birthday cake and listen to Beyonce. Yes, I am 22 years old! We're contemplating building an even more extravagant one tonight and making it a permanent house fixture. I'm sure our landlord would appreciate it!

A little life update

22 January, 2013

January has been a hectic month for myself as I've had six hand-ins for university over the past few weeks. YES, SIX! Then literally over the weekend it was my birthday so I was suitably celebrating with a few drinks and some dancing. The taste of freedom is sweet, but limited as I'll be back to struggling to reach deadlines again within a few weeks. Oh, the life of a third year! My deadline struggle was made a little better by the delivery of these beautiful roses thanks to Interflora flowers by post. I'm such a typical girl and get so overly excited at being bought roses and Interflora have a selection of beautiful Valentines gifts available.

Today, I'm planning to spend the day 'sorting my life' out (aka. I'll probably just tidy my room) and I'm hoping I'll get back into a good blogging routine soon enough. I haven't been able to share my January sales purchases with you just yet, so hopefully I'll do a haul post at some point this week but brace yourselves because there is a lot! I've had a few exciting opportunities come my way these past few weeks also which I cannot wait to share with you! If you are interested in keeping up to date with my illustration work you can follow my illustration Tumblr account here. I've started to post a lot of my work in progress because I personally love watching the process of a drawing take shape.

A Cinderella Story

11 January, 2013

Dress*: c/o Dresses Stylist

This is the second dress kindly sent to me by prom and party dress specialist, Dresses Stylist and they have successfully made me feel like a princess for the second time. I was tempted to opt for my usual safe zone of this dress in black, but decided to take a risk and pick the white version, which I'm glad I did. The dresses at Ms. Dressy are custom made to fit your exact body measurements, which means they always fit like a dream. It's also easy to see that so much care and consideration goes into the making of their garments with layers upon layers of chiffon and hand-stitched sequin detailing. I was also pleasantly surprised to see this particular dress even had an inbuilt bra into the garment! I particularly love the thick, sequined band which cinches in the waist perfectly.

I'm currently in the middle of uni work hell as I've got my first semester portfolio hand-in next Friday. It's going to be particularly stressful as I've got so much catching up to do since last term in a mad month I was contemplating quitting my course. Thankfully, I screwed my head back in place and decided to stick my course out but now I've got so much work to do I want to weep. Wish me luck!

Glasses*: c/o Firmoo // Dress*: Minkpink c/o ASOS

Glasses and sunglasses online retailer, Firmoo, contacted me a few weeks back and offered me a free pair of glasses to review on my blog. I'm pretty quiet about the fact I actually do wear specs for reading and drawing, because I'm not fond of the frames. I've also found more recently that they do not seem to be helping my vision much at all (I really must book an eye test!), so finally getting my hands on a pair of frames that I actually like through Firmoo seemed like the perfect opportunity!

I've always been a fan of the thick wayfarer black frames so I picked this pair. Unfortunately it says on the website that this specific pair of frames are being discontinued, however they have a wide choice of Wayfarer frames here to choose from. Firmoo are currently also offering first time customers their first pair of glasses absolutely free! You can read more about the offer here. They're able to send out prescription lenses as well as clear, fashion lenses. I opted for the clear lenses until I have my next optician's appointment and then plan to get my updated prescription lenses put in, so I will finally have a pair of frames I actually like!

Headpiece: Primark, £1 (old) // Fringed Dress: Urban Outfitters Sale, £10 (w/ staff discount) // Necklace: Urban Outfitters, £10 (w/ staff discount)

Happy New Year, guys! I, myself, am a little sad to see 2012 pass by. The second half of my year has been absolutely wonderful. It's been a year of serious change for me, but change for the better and has truly been my happiest year in the past 21 I've lived through. I've met some amazing human beings and feel as if I've improved in myself and grown in confidence, which was little to none at the start of the year. I'm hoping 2013 can only be better, although I'm a little terrified as I have no idea where I'll be by the summertime after I've graduated! Eek! Time for an adventure!

I spent my New Year's Eve at Street Feast which was hosted under a bridge on Old Street with an array of fairy lights, winter cocktails, delicious nibbles and some live jazz music. We then trekked to Camden and trawled through bars there for the rest of the night. I was in the best of company with some of my closest friends and we managed to get very merry! I wore this dress I've had since last Christmas but it's been waiting to make an appearance outside of my wardrobe. As you may know, I have a little obsession with flapper girls of the 1920's, all thanks to my addiction to Boardwalk Empire. Last night, I was attempting to inject a little showgirl glamour into my outfit and teamed it with a paisley, fringed kimono and a faux fur jacket.

I understand my blogging is a little sparse nowadays, simply because I no longer have the hours to spare. Blogging will always come second to my degree and my job, and now I'm in my final year the pressure is truly on and I'm struggling to juggle all three. I'm even contemplating giving up blogging all together this year to maybe take a little pressure off. I'm still undecided.
