Happy Halloween, spook sisters (& brothers)!

In true Halloween spirit I decided to... well... dress how I would usually dress! Velvet and lace happen to adorn almost every inch of my wardrobe, whilst this witchy fedora is permanently fixed to my head.

Boohoo asked me if I'm #HallowIN or #HallowOUT this Halloween year and although I'm cozying up with films tonight, I'm a full on Halloween fanatic so I'm definitely #HallowOUT! This royal blue velvet, bodycon dress with lace sleeves teamed with the fedora has me wishing I was a part of the American Horror Story Coven. What do you think? It's definitely got that modern day witchy vibe.

What are you doing this Halloween? Are you #HallowIN or are you #HallowOUT?

S P O T L I G H T | #GetJumpy with Méduse Boots

26 October, 2015
Jumper: eBay // Jeans: Topshop // Boots*: Méduse

French boot brand, Méduse, are hosting a fun and exciting competition which plan to put your jumping skills to the test. I was kindly sent a pair of my own killer classic Chelsea style 'Jumpy' boots to get jumping in!

I thought my jumping skills were pretty decent until it came to shooting them. These shots took at least 80 attempts of me bouncing around the streets with my legs tiring pretty quickly. Unfortunately these boots do not have springs incorporated into them or Flubber attached to the bottom to send me sky-rocketing into the air. Despite this one flaw, they're a pretty swish pair of boots! You can view the full collection here.

You can be in with a chance of winning your own pair of Méduse Jumpy boots by following the steps below:

  • Shoot a photo of yourself jumping in the air like I have (you don't need to have Jumpy boots!) - all photos must be uploaded to Instagram using the hashtag #GetJumpy and tagging @MeduseOriginal
  • Photos should be submitted for entry into the contest by between Monday 19th October 2015 11am and Monday 2nd November 4pm (G.M.T+1)
  • All approved photo submissions will be added to a Facebook album on the Méduse® Facebook page (www.facebook.com/meduse.original) by  Tuesday 3rd November 2015.
How to Vote on Facebook:
  • One Facebook like = one vote!
  • Voting closes on Tuesday 10th November 2015 at 4pm (G.M.T+1)
  • The 3 photos with the most votes will win a pair of Méduse from the current collection!

Now, get jumping!

T R A V E L | The Best Burger In Amsterdam

25 October, 2015

One of the best parts of travelling is experiencing new cuisine and indulging in something you may not be able to try at home.

For me and James, we eat burgers wherever we go (we also run a burger blog at BURGERFACE *shameless plug*). I mean, I know we can eat a burger at home, but burgers are the best food type by far. Plus, we never want to miss out on finding the world's perfect burger!

A few months back we took a trip to Amsterdam. Before we had even touched down in the Netherlands, we knew we wanted to stuff our faces with as many burgers as possible within the five days we were there. The day before we left the city, we were walking through the famous Albert Cuypmarkt when James spotted The Butcher burger bar hiding behind the market stalls. We had heard people rave about The Butcher before so we had high expectations when we walked in. Ordering a standard cheese & bacon burger to share, we took each took a bite and looked at each other. HECK, WE MAY HAVE FOUND THE BEST BURGER EVER.

You can read our full review of The Butcher here.

You can't always leave where you eat when on holiday down to chance like we did with The Butcher. Travelbag have come up with a genius idea of creating an interactive map of restaurants across Dubai, so you can plan where you want to eat before you travel. If you're headed to Dubai in the near future, it will definitely prove a useful tool to plan where you want to eat. You can filter down their recommended restaurants dependent on your budget or the cuisine you're looking for. Now, get me on a plane to Dubai!

You can view the interactive Dubai restaurant map by Travelbag here.

S P O T L I G H T | Top 5 Tips To Help You Start Your Own Online Store

24 October, 2015
Top 5 Tips To Help You Start Your Own Online Store

I've just finished reading #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso. I had been putting it off for the past year, but everyone kept singing it's praises so I ultimately gave in. I've been dabbling with the idea of starting my own online vintage emporium for years, but recently I've been researching more and more to try and make that dream a reality. It's a career I can see myself completely and blissfully happy in for the rest of my life, but I just haven't reached the right stage in life to make it happen. When it does happen, I'm going ALL in!

According to #GIRLBOSS '80% of new businesses fail within the first year and a half of launch' (ouch!), which means it's critical you prepare before you even think about throwing yourself into the big, wide world of e-commerce.

Find the right wholesaler:

Everyone knows that a good product is the key to success. It's important to carefully consider every product you choose for your inventory. Nowadays it's pretty easy to hunt down a wholesaler to suit your brand online. For example, Mary Jane Fashion sell on trend apparel by the bulk.

If you're dreaming of your own vintage emporium like myself, then go out and hunt down those secondhand treasures yourself! Rummage through boot sales, charity shops, thrift shops and older relative's wardrobes. Just search anywhere and everywhere you possibly can! Your stock is more likely to stand out if you've hand chosen every individual piece by hand. Although there are some great vintage wholesalers out there, they're pretty hard to find. Unfortunately, there's also a lot of vintage wholesalers that are awful. After all you don't want to be investing in boxes and boxes of secondhand clothing that is essentially C&A pieces with the labels cut out. No, thank you.

If you can create your own handmade products, then you've got a USP already; the fact, no one can purchase what you're selling anywhere else. Kapow! Saying that, there are a lot of talented handmade sellers out there, especially over on Etsy. You're still going to have to fight just as hard for those buyers, so make sure your product is a hell of a lot better than every other one on the market.

Build the perfect brand image:

Do not even think about launching until you are 110% that your brand image is perfect.

Create a list of what you want your brand to say without having to spell it out. Examine every last detail across your online store and social media channels and make sure it conveys exactly that. Everything from the logo and homepage right down to the packaging and font you use will determine how strong your brand is.

As a wise man named Ron Swanson once said: "Don't half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing." Although this phrase was nabbed from a fictional character from a sitcom, it's something that has sat in the back of my mind ever since. Is your life ready to commit itself fully to your business endeavours or are there other priorities and obstacles that stand in your way? For me, I've not taken the plunge just yet as I have commitments in other areas that will not allow me to put my heart and soul into my business. For now, I'm looking at growing my career and dream about globe-trotting whilst I'm in my twenties. I'll focus on my vintage empire once this longing wanderlust I possess is content.

Also, if you've never seen Parks & Recreation, I strongly recommend you abandon your laptop/phone/tablet right now and give up everything you had planned for the next few weeks. The business dream can wait.

Use social media to your advantage:

If you're a blogger reading this, then you're already one step ahead of the game. You already have an army of loyal readers and followers who like what you do, so you've already got a potential target market at your finger tips. Use this. Seriously. Use it!

Social media has completely changed the world of marketing as now budding entrepreneurs now a way to reach their target audience pretty much FOR FREE! Of course, there are paid social campaigns available, which you can use to your benefit but if you're willing to put the elbow grease in then all you need to do is join in the conversation online with your target market. Creating a community with your customers builds a relationship that will hopefully have them shopping with you time and time again.

Make them aware you exist and that you're a real person behind the business! It still baffles me that are so many companies out there that don't even use their social media channels as often and as well as they should.

Build a hype before the launch:

Use the time before your official launch wisely. Make a big deal about the fact you're about to open an online store, because it IS a big deal! This will be the start of a new chapter in your life, so go in loud and proud with all guns blazing. Find creative ways for your audience to be counting the days until your store opens. Again, this links in with the above point of utilising social media to your advantage. Post on your social channels daily leading up to the day of your launch, offer giveaways and holla every chance you get that you have a new store opening!

Absolutely fall in LOVE what you're creating:

There's no point in investing your time and money into a dream that you're not absolutely besotted with. You should put every ounce of effort and love into every section of your new business baby, even down to writing product descriptions and counting your stock inventory.

If you don't love what what you do, it'll show and your customers will not stick around. If every single inch of your company has been considered and then re-considered and then considered again, your consumer will believe that your product is worth buying.

Packaging also counts for a lot, so don't skimp on delivery costs. How many times have you been put off by a company if the delivery has taken too far long? Then, how impressed have you been when a product has been lovingly, hand packaged and stands out from other online stores. There's a million and one other places your customer could shop, make sure that next time it's with you again by looking after them and engaging with them.

Now, go and absolutely kill it and let me know how you get on!

S T Y L E | Daniel Wellington His 'n' Hers

23 October, 2015
Daniel Wellington Watches
Daniel Wellington Classic Canterbury Ladies Watch
James wears a Daniel Wellington watch (available here), a H&M jumperan FYT & co. beanie & some fancy trainers that cost a lot of dosh.
Leigh wears a Daniel Wellington watch (available here), an ASOS hat, a Zara dress & New Look boots.

This outfit post is a little different from the usual... OH HI, JAMES aka. other half of BURGERFACE.

You might have seen my previous post on our Daniel Wellington watches that we received a little while back. Since they've arrived they haven't left either of our wrists. I've blabbered on about them enough in said previous post, so I shan't bore you with me repetitively declaring how bloody wonderful they are. As James was also kindly gifted a new watch, I decided to ask shove him in front of the camera for once. It seems he knows how to pout than I ever could. This is actually a pretty colourful get-up in comparison to James' usual black tee & black jeans uniform look, so count yourself pretty lucky that he dressed up for the occasion. I suppose that's pretty rich coming from me who is sporting the same old fedora and yet another velvet smock dress - whoops!

Now we have matching watches, does that make us one of those cringeworthy couples? Yes, probably. Next on the list is matching winter fleeces.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER: You can get 15% off your own Daniel Wellington watch with discount code 'foxandfeatherblog', but be quick as it's only valid until the 31st October 2015.

R E C I P E | Gluten Free Spinach, Coconut & Goat's Cheese Pasta

21 October, 2015

I was recently contacted by Alpro to take part in their challenge of creating a recipe that combined their brand new coconut cuisine milk and single soya cream alternative. Now I actually don't drink milk. I'm not lactose or dairy intolerant, I just absolutely hate the stuff. Because of this, I've been using Alpro's soya products for years in my daily coffees and in my morning cereals, so I was looking forward to trying out two of their other products in a recipe.

My first obvious thought that came to mind when I was presented with their coconut cuisine challenge was to make some sort of curry. Maybe green thai or a creamy chicken korma? No. How about an exotic coconut pasta sauce. Sold! Now, I decided to use gluten free spaghetti, because pasta wreaks all sorts of havoc on my stomach. I know I'm gluten intolerant, but I haven't come to terms with accepting it yet. I just love bread and cake too much, okay? You can substitute the gluten free pasta for regular, but GF spaghetti is actually delicious. Trust me.

Cook Time: 15 minutes | Serves: 4 | Gluten Free, Vegetarian

What you will need:
  • 400g of gluten-free spaghetti
  • 250ml of Alpro Coconut Cuisine
  • 250ml of Alpro Single Soya
  • 3 handfuls of spinach
  • 4 cloves of minced garlic
  • 125g of goat's cheese
  • A handful of fresh parmesan
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • Ground black pepper to season

Let's cook:
  • Fry the minced garlic with a splash of oil until golden brown.
  • Pour in the Alpro Coconut Cuisine, the Alpro Single Soya, lemon juice, ground ginger and pepper then continue to cook on a medium to low temperature for five minutes.
  • Transfer the sauce to a blender and add the raw spinach (keep some spinach aside to fry). Blend until smooth. The spinach should leave the sauce looking bright green!
  • Cook the gluten free pasta for around 8 - 10 minutes.
  • Drain the pasta before putting back into the pan and adding the sauce. Cook together for a further 3 - 5 minutes.
  • Whilst the pasta is cooking, fry the remainder of the spinach to serve.
  • Crumble goat's cheese and a little parmesan on top.

E V E N T | #CarnivalFiesta with Thomas Cook Airlines

19 October, 2015
First thing's first, Talented Talkers and Thomas Cook Airlines know how to throw one hell of a party. I had been counting down the days to the #CarnivalFiesta event ever since Erica shot an invite into my inbox last month. Travel blogging is something I've dipped my toes into recently, so to attend an event hosted by Thomas Cook Airlines was just too good to miss! With the promise of cocktails, colours and carnival style partying nothing could hold me back.

#CarnivalFiesta with Thomas Cook Airlines#CarnivalFiesta with Thomas Cook Airlines

The night started calmly and quietly. I was a bit anxious about arriving as I was attending the event alone, which is something I haven't done in a long, long time. On the train from Southampton to London, I took a long a G&T to calm those nerves and hopefully aid my undesirable, unavoidable awkwardness. Gin: always the answer.

Arriving alone actually wasn't a problem like I had previously feared as there were a few recognisable faces around the room and everyone was so wonderfully welcoming.

After an electric opening act from our Samba teachers for the evening, we were all divided into groups and sent on our merry way to our first activity of the night. Ours first activity happened to be a cocktail masterclass. Now it's safe to say I was pretty tipsy by this point and I had only had two cocktails upon arrival, but boy were they strong! I think the fact our first stop was half an hour of mixing and drinking really set the pace for the rest of the night. In the back of my mind I thought I'd adapt to making cocktails due to my two year stint as a teenager working as a barista in Starbucks. How wrong I was. I completely sucked.

Next up, we wandered over to our next venture proudly clutching at our own-made cocktails in our hands. We got to sit down and have a chat with the Thomas Cook Airlines team who were on hand to run us through....

Did you know the second biggest carnival in the world is held in Tenerife?! No? I didn't either before the other night. In fact, I've never even been to Notting Hill Carnival, which is surprising as drinking and extravagant, colourful outfits is pretty much my weekends summed up in a nutshell.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is held every February and is considered to be the second biggest and most popular carnival in the world, second only to the one held in Rio de Janeiro. The carnival itself is spread into two parts: the official carnival and the street carnival afterwards, which is a little more loosely organised as residents take to the streets to dance until sunrise. Sounds like a good time, right? Flights to Tenerife are a ridiculous amount cheaper than those to Rio too. Right, who's coming with me next year?!

#CarnivalFiesta with Thomas Cook Airlines
#CarnivalFiesta with Thomas Cook Airlines

Next up was the make-up station where we were able to coat our faces in glitter. After spending the majority of the summer festival season covered head-to-toe in glitter I was in my element! I enthusiastically smothered beneath my eyes with my Vaseline and a lilac-emerald combination glitter.

Suitably sparkly, after a few more cocktails (they were NEVER-ENDING, I tell you!), we headed towards my most-dreaded activity of the night: the Samba dance class. I have NO rhythm anywhere in my body. I'm not just saying that either, I literally resemble a flailing turkey trying to fly if I attempt any sort of dance routine.

The last stop of the night was the headdress making workshop where we were armed with a glue gun and shed load of feathers. This is the station I had been waiting for all night long! However, after having an endless stream of mojitos, then being handed a scolding hot glue gun and with a box of rainbow-coloured feathers, I think the excitement may have got the better of me as I managed to come away with a pretty horrific glue gun burn - ouch! I did walk away with an absolutely wondrous,  multi-coloured feathered headpiece that resembled a dead parrot balanced on top of my head (evidence below) and an aloe vera soaked bandage resting on my hand. The signs of a good night, I say.

#CarnivalFiesta with Thomas Cook Airlines#CarnivalFiesta with Thomas Cook Airlines

Thomas Cook Airlines are generously giving away a pair of tickets to the Tenerife festival next year to one hell of a lucky attendee at #CarnivalFiesta. All I have to do is plead my case why I should be their festival representative in 2016, so here goes nothing...

I'm not the most well-travelled girl in the world (yet I'm trying to expand my travel blogging content... work that one out!). In fact, I've been abroad three times this year and those three times were in the Netherlands. The #CarnivalFiesta event has caused a case of seriously itchy feet and has me dusting off my passport in preparation for my next overseas adventure. I must admit I'd never considered Tenerife before last week, simply because I saw it as a destination purely for a sunbathing holiday, which isn't something that appeals to me. When I go on holiday, I go for an adventure rather than relaxation. I'm just too restless to lay on a beach all week! I love to walk until my feet are covered in blisters and my eyes have taken in as much of my surroundings as possible.

After chatting to the Thomas Cook Airlines team at the event, my perceptions of Tenerife have completely changed. Of course, Tenerife is still a perfect choice for a sunny, relaxation getaway, but it's also alive with Spanish culture that is just waiting to be explored! I want to take these itchy feet of mine and take them to the island of Tenerife, so they can not only cover as much terrain as possible, but also dance in the annual carnival next February!

Now, I can't promise my samba skills are on point, but my wardrobe is so carnival ready for 2016...

Extravagant headdresses - CHECK!
Sequin gowns - YOU BETCHA!
Embellished bralets & rainbow tie-dye frocks - OF COURSE!
A stock pile of glitter - DUH!

If you fancy joining the carnival party in Tenerife next year, then you can find flights from less the £40 here! Who's with me?!

S T Y L E | Daniel Wellington Watches

13 October, 2015
Daniel Wellington watches
Watches*: Daniel Wellington (get 15% off with discount code: foxandfeatherblog)

Daniel Wellington watches are a favourite of mine when it comes to adorning my wrists. You may have seen this red and navy striped number stealing the show in a recent outfit post of mine here. Their designs are simple, classic and elegantly chic meaning they are the perfect accompaniment to any everyday outfit. I always find myself reaching for one of my DW watches in the mornings as tend to fit in with anything I'm wearing.

Featured here is the Canterbury Classic design with a rose gold watch face, just because rose gold is simply the best. I'm really not over the 'rose gold' fad that appeared several years ago. As someone who is a little unsure on gold, I find rose gold a little softer and less brazen. Granted the striped strap does take a little more thought with styling over my Classic Sheffield watch, but it sits as a humble statement piece on my wrist that draws a little more attention. James opted for a piece from the brand new menswear 'Dapper' collection, which feature striking blue set of hands on the face. In fact, I'm really quite jealous of his 'Dapper' watch and find myself wanting to pinch it for myself from time to time!

Daniel Wellington are offering Fox & Feather readers a generous 15% off their order until the 31st October 2015. All you have to do is pop the discount code 'foxandfeatherblog' in at the checkout. Happy shopping!

R E C I P E | Norwegian Fårikål #TasteOfNorway

09 October, 2015
Norwegian Fårikål

I was recently asked by Inntravel to take part in their #TasteOfNorway campaign by re-creating a traditional Norwegian dish. Now, I can't say I know too much about Norwegian cuisine. Burgers and chips are definitely my forte (*INSERT SHAMELESS PLUG TO BURGER BLOG HERE*). However I was pretty excited to try something a little different to what I would usually eat.

The FÃ¥rikÃ¥l is seen as the country's national dish. FÃ¥rikÃ¥l, which is literally translated to "sheep in cabbage", is a dish that is celebrated across Norway on the last Thursday every September. This corresponds to the timing of when the famers in Norway bring their sheep down from the mountains after a long summer grazing in the hills. It is essentially a lamb and cabbage casserole and is the perfect autumn hearty and warming meal. Now, it's not meant to look "pretty" (although I've tried my best with the photos!), but does any casserole look 'Instagram worthy"? No. Plus, the messier it is, the more delicious it is!

You will need:

  • 0.75kg of lamb shank, shoulder or brisket (we used lamb shanks)
  • 1 small cabbage head (cut into 1/4 wedges)
  • 0.5l of water
  • 1 cube of beef stock
  • 1 bayleaf
  • 10 whole black peppercorns
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh parsley to garnish
  • Boiled potatoes, flatbread & lingonberry jams to serve
Let's cook:
  • Cut the cabbage head into 1/4 wedges making sure you leave the the stem in tact as this holds the cabbage together (learn from my mistakes!)
  • Lightly fry the lamb in butter to seal the meat
  • When the meat is lightly browned, throw it into a large pot or casserole dish and season to taste. Then mix in the water, beef stock, bayleaf, cabbage and peppercorns.
  • Boil under a lid on the hob for around an hour, but keep checking to make sure the water has not evaporated.
  • Garnish with parsley and serve alongside boiled potatoes, flatbread and lingonberry jam.

It really is as simple as that and it's absolutely delicious! You can change the lamb for mutton if you'd prefer as it's a much stronger flavour meat. Be aware, it's important that the meat is fatty as the fat is soaked up into the cabbage during the process, which flavours it.

R E V I E W | Appleyard London Flowers

07 October, 2015

Things have been a little lame for me recently. I won't bore you with the details, but it's just been one of those months where not much seems to be going in my favour. The remedy to a bad month was definitely have some new dreamy shoes & flowers delivered to my doorstep.

Appleyard London have an absolutely stunning array of bouquets on their website, where you can send flowers via post to surprise loved ones. I opted for the 'Serenity' bouquet as I've always been drawn to white roses and the tancetum daisies compliment them perfectly. They even offer next day flower delivery, which is perfect for those panicked, last-minute moments where you may have forgotten someone's birthday or anniversary (it happens!). Or maybe you just need an "I'm sorry!" bouquet delivered in record time!

You can get an exclusive 33% off of Appleyard's range of luxury bouquets with discount code: 'BLOG33'.

Last week we saw the last of the summer sun. Autumn happens to be my favourite season, so whilst I'm opening my arms to the crunchy, golden leaves and brisker, chilly mornings, I will miss prancing around in floaty summer kaftans like this. After all those 80 denier black tights ruin absolutely every outfit!

This embroidered, fringed kaftan was a steal from Monsoon at a little over £20 from their previous sale. I opted for the XL for a bit of extra length and a looser, bohemian style fit. Also, it doubles up as a great food baby disguise - win, win! I absolutely had to have these boots when I discovered them on ASOS! I spotted them a few days before payday, but luckily James came to the rescue before they sold out - hurrah! I don't think he could have dealt with my incessant moaning if I hadn't have got my paws on yet ANOTHER pair of velvet boots to add to my ongoing collection. A girl can never have too many velvet boots!
