How to style sequin trousers
How to style sequin trousers

There's never a good reason to not wear sequins, in my opinion.

I took these new bedazzled trousers for a spin when we went for a casual Sunday stroll through Southampton city centre last weekend. I'm a magpie when it comes to anything remotely shiny and I'm a firm believer in the idea that there's no such thing as overdressing. Sequins shouldn't just be restricted to the festive season and evening shindigs - no ma'am - they should absolutely be worn to the supermarket or for a mid-morning brunch date!

These trousers are perfect for the transitional piece to dress both up and down. As I wasn't going anywhere fancy last weekend, I teamed them with this retro slogan tee from Joanie Clothing and my trusty pair of Vans. I was lucky enough to win this cute little tee as Kaye tagged me in their Twitter competition earlier in the month and we both won a t-shirt each! It's oh so soft and the quality of the t-shirt itself is incredible. As the weather was a little nippy and grey - if you couldn't already tell from the photos - I layered up with an old staple midi-length coat that I've had since my university days when I worked for Urban Outfitters. I think I paid around 15 quid for this coat in the sale and it's lasted me bloody years!

All of these photos were shot on my new Google Pixel 2, which I bought last week. I'm still getting to grips with it, because switching from an iPhone to Android operating system is difficult, but I'm in love with the quality camera on it! It's so nice to be able to shoot decent photos quickly and without setting up my camera. I'm not intending to use it indefinitely for my future blog photos as it doesn't quite live up to my 50mm lens, but it certainly makes it easier to shoot spontaneously when I may not have my camera to hand!

Review | PARADE at Chamäleon Theater, Berlin

21 October, 2017
Review | PARADE at Chamäleon Theater, Berlin

Review | PARADE at Chamäleon Theater, Berlin
At the start of October, Chamäleon Theater invited me back to Berlin to review their new show, PARADE. I had such a fantastic time when I visited Berlin back in March to review their previous show, Scotch & Soda, that I was absolutely overjoyed to hop back on a plane to one of my favourite European cities for the weekend.

Just as I had done previously, I made a point of not researching the show too much before my trip in order for it to be more of a surprise and unexpected on the evening. However, after witnessing their previous season's show and knowing that Chamäleon specialise in innovative contemporary circus, I knew that it was unlikely that I was about to be disappointed! They only showcase two shows per year on 6-month runs, in where the same performers will usually stay throughout the entire show's lifespan and will perform in multiple shows per week.

The theatre itself sits within Berlin's Hackeschen Höfen in the Berlin-Mitte district and is conveniently located only a few minutes walk from the Hackeschen Markt S-Bahn station. In a previous life, the theatre was a historic ballroom and it boasts a beautiful exterior that you're unlikely to miss whilst wandering through the courtyards of the Hackeschen Höfen. I touched more upon the sheer beauty of the venue itself in my previous blog post here.

Review | PARADE at Chamäleon Theater, Berlin
We were lucky enough to be reserved a table in the second row from the stage, whereas last time I visited we were seated on the balcony. Whilst the balcony offers a spectacular view of the entire stage, being sat at a table that is situated just a few metres from the stage made the experience so much more personal and immersive.

PARADE was a completely different experience from Scotch & Soda, and in all honesty, I found it far more spellbinding. Quite frankly I shouldn't compare the two as despite them both falling into the contemporary circus, they're in completely different genres. PARADE's narrative follows the group of people as they follow a journey of self-discovery as they unwrap the veiled props from around the stage and each prop discovered becomes the basis of the story within each scene. These props range from boxes to a bunch of flowers to mirrors, which are all so simple but become pivotal to the performance. A small story plays out within each part involving the individual objects, but the most prominent story of them all is when the group discover a mysterious, masked figure within a box. It's a show that touches upon a spectre of emotions and thoughts throughout the show from unrequited love scenes to suggested political and social undertones. As a female it was also refreshing to see some of the traditional gender roles reversed as throughout the act there was a balance between the females holding up the male performers and vice versa.

Throughout the performance, I was in awe at the limits the performers could push their bodies to, as well as the strength and discipline they possessed. It's absolutely incredible what the human body is capable of and to witness those dedicated enough to push themselves to their limits on stage was awe-inspiring. Each of the artists brought their own unique artistry to the show, whether that be acrobatics, dance, contortion music or aerial hoops. It was inspiring to see how they worked seamlessly as a group, despite having only been brought together just a few months before for the show. I cannot even begin to imagine putting my trust into someone that I haven't known for long to catch me from a significant height, but the cast move seamlessly without so much as flinching before their drops! I was particularly blown away by the performance of Beata Surmiak who was able to control her body with such ease and strength.

The show is ideal for an international audience as there is hardly any spoken word and is more reliant on the visual representation of the narrative. In fact, the evening we were there the audience was filled with spectators from all across the globe. The show is supported by a mesmerising video installations and a live percussion soundtrack, which help glue the performance together perfectly.

PARADE was directed by Brendan Shelper and it is the first collaboration between his creative production company, battleRoyal, and Chamäleon. It's a powerful and emotive show that leaves you feeling energised and full of questions. In our group, we nattered away afterwards about what themes we personally took away from the show and it was intriguing to hear how different some of theories were, but then what you take away is all down to personal experience.

If you're planning on visiting Berlin and want to experience something spectacular and embrace Berlin's creative culture, then I highly recommend that you should spend an evening at the Chamäleon. Tickets start from just €39 and PARADE will run until 18th February 2018.

You can book tickets over on their website here.

That Little Red Dress

19 October, 2017
How To Wear Vans Old Skool Sneakers with a Dress

When visiting Paris last month, we were lucky enough to have the weather on our side as we were treated to three days of consistent sunshine. In fact, I was more sunburnt from my jaunt in Paris than I was from my trip to Ibiza. This meant I could dress for the summer, for what is likely to be the last time this year, whilst wandering around the city and taking in the sights.

I picked up this little velvet dress in the Zara sale around a year or so ago and it actually featured in an outfit post here. The past year I made the decision to slow down my spending on clothes in order to have more money to travel the world instead. I mean, it has worked as I'm hitting up my 11th city break (no.9 of my '12 in 12' mission though) since the March next, but it's meant I've had to get creative and rediscover some older pieces that I already have in my existing wardrobe. Hence the reason why I'm re-introducing this little red number.

As I was galavanting around the French capital by foot however, I had to consider what I was wearing on my feet. Even though I typically love a pair of ankle boots, they tend to destroy my feet after walking over 15 km per day, so I had a browse through the trainers sale via Love The Sales before I left. I had been coveting a pair of black Old Skool Vans for quite a while, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to snap them up before my next city trip. Admittedly, I did have to wear them in before Paris and they did initially give me blisters on the back of my heels but now they're perfectly comfortable! They're also one of the few pairs of trainers/sneakers that I feel like I can just throw on with a dress and they'll go, unlike a lot of other trainers.

Review | Golden Dragon Restaurant at Bang Bang Oriental Hall, London

16 October, 2017
Bang Bang Oriental Golden Dragon Restaurant London

Golden Dragon restaurant boasts sleek and stylish interiors

Bang Bang Oriental is London's biggest Asian food hall, located in Colindale and just a ten minute walk from the tube station. The eco-friendly venue brings a pan-Asian dining experience and social space to the north of the city with over 20 individual kiosks, including a mix of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese, Taiwanese and Malaysian cuisine, and a fine-dining restaurant - Golden Dragon.

Golden Dragon restaurant, which originally opened in Chinatown over 20 years ago before opening its new flagship branch in Colindale, specialises in dim sum by day and an extensive Cantonese and Pekinese á la carte in the evening. It's well known amongst London foodies as it's well-known for its famous dim sum.

We were invited along to review the menu at Golden Dragon restaurant and as we were booked for 7:30pm on a Thursday evening, we ended up tasting the evening menu.  Upon arrival I was shown to my seat within the huge restaurant space that boasts an extravagant rich, golden decor with oriental touches. The restaurant itself had a tranquil atmosphere compared to the busy bustle and excitement upstairs in the food hall.

To keep things simple we ordered the vegetarian set menu, which is priced at just £17.80 per person and is a minimum of 2 people to order the set menu. We figured that a set menu is a great way to enjoy most of the vegetarian dishes that were on offer at the Golden Dragon.

Golden Dragon Restaurant Vegetarian Set Menu

The set menu has nine different dishes and appeared as three rounds of food for us both to share. The first plate that was brought out consisted of crispy seaweed, vegetarian spring rolls, garlic salt & chilli breaded mushrooms and vegetarian honey roasted bean curd. Luckily for me, James hates mushrooms so I had the breaded garlic & chilli mushrooms to myself and I devoured them all. However, unfortunately they were a little cold but the rest of the plate wasn't, so I'm assuming they may have been waiting on the plate a little while longer than the rest of the food. The honey roasted bean curd however was the stand-out dish amongst the rest; it was extremely sweet and loaded with sugar as it was dripping in a rich, brown, honey-based sauce, that although was a little unusual as a starter, was absolutely delicious!

Golden Dragon Restaurant Vegetarian Set Menu

The second round of dishes was the Aromatic Vegetarian Crispy 'Duck', which was a lot different to what I expected. My experience with vegetarian imitations of duck have either been along the lines of a gross, jelly like substance or the frozen Linda McCartney hoisin pulled 'duck' range, which happens to taste incredibly similar to actual duck. However, what we were presented with at the Golden Dragon restaurant was completely unexpected; we were greeted with a crispy, pastry that is made from deep-fried bean curd, pressed with flour, to create a wafery and sweet dish. The pressed bean curd on it's own didn't quite taste like duck, but once it was trickled with hoisin sauce and added to a pancake with cucumbers and onions, it all combined perfectly to taste like traditional duck pancakes. Considering that we were so unsure what to make of the dish when it first came out, we were both taken aback by how delectable it was.

Golden Dragon Restaurant Vegetarian Set Menu

The third round of the vegetarian tasting menu consisted of four plates: Braized Tofu, Szechuan Vegetarian 'Chicken', Stir-Fried Mixed Vegetables and Vegetable Fried Rice. The only plate here that I personally didn't like was the braised tofu, which was far too soft for my liking as I'm someone who can only eat crispy tofu. The rice and the stir-fried vegetables made a nice accompaniment to the fiery Szechuan 'chicken', which was flavoursome and possessed the same stringy texture as chicken breast.

By the end of the set sharing menu, we were both incredibly full up and although we peeked at the dessert menu, neither of us could stomach it. Considering the set menu only costs £17.60 per person and we both came away clutching our well-rounded stomaches, the price point seems more than reasonable for the sheer amount of food you get. Also, the vegetarian set menu is a great way to try all of the vegetarian options from the wider menu.

Breaking the Taboo & Busting Myths with Canesten | Win a £50 Amazon Voucher!*

10 October, 2017

Today I'm talking about something a little different from my usual topics on Fox & Feather; today I'm talking about breaking the taboo of talking about intimate health and taking care of your downstairs department with a little help from Canesten.

I spoke to a few friends recently to discuss exactly why we don't discuss our intimate health so openly and the unanimous answer was simply because of 'embarrassment', which is completely unnecessary. It seems we're paving the way for talking more openly about our periods, which is fantastic, but why is vaginal health still considered a taboo? It's our reservations about discussing this with others, including doctors or pharmacists, that can lead to us self-diagnosing ourselves incorrectly. In fact, many women mistake bacterial vaginosis (BV) for thrush even though they are two completely different infections and require different treatments entirely.

Even I'll confess that I didn't know the first thing about identifying BV from thrush, but luckily Canesten have set up an area on their website where you can identify the symptoms of BV from thrush before you seek out treatment. Over 75% of those with a vagina will suffer from thrush at least once in their life and a lot of people don't even consider BV despite it being so common, so it's important that we educate ourselves on spotting the differences. A lot of us will suffer uncomfortably in silence because we're too embarrassed to talk about it - it's time for that to change!

Take the quiz

Canesten have created an online quiz, which will test your knowledge of thrush and BV. I took the quiz and only scored a measly 3/6 and in all honesty, most of it was purely guess work! If you want to give it a go and be in with a chance of winning a £50 Amazon gift voucher (see below), you can take the quiz here.

In order to encourage YOU to educate yourself a little more on intimate health, I've teamed up with Canesten to give away a £50 Amazon voucher to anyone who takes the quiz and follows the instructions on the Rafflecopter widget to the left. Let me know how you get on in the comments below.

An Eye Care Experience with David Clulow

03 October, 2017
David Clulow Style Event
David Clulow Style Event

Before last month, the last time I had my eyes examined by an optician was a few years back. During university I felt like my eyes were struggling with the long days sat in front of a laptop, so I waited until a certain big brand optician handed out free eye test leaflets and I took full advantage of the freebie. The whole process was quick and I was out within five minutes with a prescription in my hand that advised me I was slightly long-sighted. After that, I felt a little pressured to purchase frames then and there on the spot, but knowing fully well in my mind that my student bank balance could not afford to make a decision so quickly, so after making some excuse, I scampered out of there quickly. I somehow managed to cheat the system and ended up ordering a pair of frames online for a considerable amount less than the frames that were on offer in the store that day.

However, the only issue with ordering frames online is that you can't try them on before purchasing them. There are AR webcam facilities that exist on some websites, but unfortunately it's just not the same as physically trying out multiple pairs of frames in-store to find the perfect ones to suit your face. I've found that since ordering those frames online a few years ago, I don't really wear them because I'm not 100% happy with them on my face.

David Clulow Style Event

Last month, I was invited to an intimate pre-London Fashion Week style event hosted by luxury opticians, David Clulow. I didn't actually attend London Fashion Week this year, but it seemed like the perfect opportunity to have my eyes re-examined over a few bubbles. When I arrived at the Secret Garden Room in the South Place hotel, I found there were a variety of frames presented on tables across the venue and plenty of bloggers en masse trying them on. I was instantly drawn to a pair of silver Ray Ban, oversized aviators and tried them on feeling a little unsure if they were too brash. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely loved them, but I wasn't sure if I had the confidence to pull them off. I had a feeling I was looking more Deidre Barlow than Olivia Palermo.

Quickly, I moved onto trying out some other frames but nothing seemed to quite grab me like the aviators did. Whilst holding a pair of pale pink frames in my hand, one of the representatives at David Clulow looked at them with an unsure look and said, "I'm not sure that the colour of these frames will suit your skin tone." I was taken aback a little, but not because I was offended, but because she was being refreshingly honest for someone whose job it is to sell frames.

"Try them on and see what you think," she urged. So I did. And you know what? The pale pink shade of the frames blended into my pale skin. By golly, she was right!

"Do you know which ones I think will suit you? These Ray Ban aviators - try them on!" she continued as she handed me the exact pair that I had originally been drawn to earlier in the evening. Knowing I had tried them already, I put them back on again and looked in the mirror. I bloody loved them! I had loved them from the moment that I had first tried them on, but that moment of self-doubt had made me place them back down. Upon finding out they were the only frames in that style left, I knew that I had to have them so I laid my claim upon them until the end of the night.

During the event, we were all invited to try out the Auto Refractor, which is part of every David Clulow pre-screen eye test, and can estimate your prescription within just 30 seconds. Once again, my estimated prescription appeared as being the slightest bit long-sighted but I was invited for a full eye examination at my local David Clulow store before my prescription lenses would be fitted into my shiny new frames.

David Clulow Style Event
David Clulow Style Event

A couple of weeks later, after arranging an appointment via Marie from the Islington store on the night of the event, I headed to my local store in Angel to have my eyes fully examined. Admittedly, I've not had regular eye tests throughout my lifetime, however I think it's fair to say that my eye examination at David Clulow was thorough.

The entire examination took around thirty minutes, using several different pieces of eye technology and equipment that are suited to your eye care needs. When I mentioned that I've suffered from migraines for nearly a decade, my optician suggested that we should measure the pressure inside my eye to rule out a chronic glaucoma. Luckily, it was ruled out - phew - but it was reassuring to have it checked out, just in case. My prescription at the end of the examination came out with identical results to the Auto Refractor that had predicted my prescription on the night of the event. So yes, I am a little bit long-sighted, which actually makes me great for reading the number of an approaching bus when waiting for one, FYI.

The staff at David Clulow then placed the frames on my face and marked exactly where the my eyes sat in correlation to the lens to ensure they were fitted correctly for my eyes. I was told to expect my frames to be ready for collection within 7 - 10 working days, but I received a phone call just 4 working days later letting me know that my glasses were ready for collection! The turnaround was impressively fast.

When I did collect them the staff once again made sure that they were comfortable and didn't need any further adjustments before letting me leave with them. It was so nice to have a team that truly wanted me to be happy and 100% comfortable with my glasses. I'm confident that I'll be booking all of my future eye care appointments via David Clulow ...specifically the Islington branch, because they're all bloody fantastic!

Review | A Secret Food Tour of Montmartre, Paris

01 October, 2017
Secret Food Tours Montmartre Review

During our visit to Paris, we stayed in the 18th arrondissement of Montmartre, which is also home to the Sacré-CÅ“ur. The colourful, hilltop neighbourhood of Montmartre, which enthrones the rest of Paris from atop of a tremendous hill, is known to be the artistic and bohemian district of the French capital. The cobbled, steep streets and alleyways are lined with boulangeries,  cafes and independent shops that are frequented by locals as well as a tourist crowd.

When initially searching for some more 'alternative' things to do in Paris, I chanced across Secret Food Tours, who offer specialised food tours across the world but are actually based in Montmartre, Paris. It's a well-known fact that I bloody love food and having never been on a 'food tour' before during my travels, I was keen to discover French cuisine and the local Montmartre food scene.

On the Saturday morning we met our tour group outside of Abbesses metro station and we quickly spotted our tour guide, Emma, thanks to her huge orange umbrella with 'Secret Food Tours' splashed across the top of it. Upon arriving we all introduced ourselves and got to know the rest of our group for the afternoon. There was only a total of 10 of us in the tour, which made it an intimate and more personal experience. After all of our group had arrived, Emma took us through a brief history of the Montmartre neighbourhood and how it had grown into the desirable, trendy area it is today. Before our tour began, we stopped off to see the Le mur de je t'aime - the 'I love you' wall - which is a meeting space where love comes together in over 300 different languages. Fédéric Baron and Claire Kito created the mural in 2000, and it has the phrase 'I love you' written across it over 1000 times in languages from across the world. A wall, which is usually a symbol of division, has been turned into a piece of artwork that is meant to unite with love - how sweet!

Secret Food Tours Montmartre Review

The outline of the food tour is to shop like a Parisian, avoiding all the chains stores and supermarkets, by stopping off at some hidden, award-winning caterers and then sample the selection of foods we pick up at the end in a little bar down the road. The tour price includes all of the food and wine you taste throughout the 3 to 3 and a half hours, and believe me when I say that you certainly get a lot of food!

Our first food stop on the tour happened to be a local butcher, but as James and myself were the token vegetarians on the tour we decided to stay outside for this particular stop, which wasn't an issue. Emma picked up some cured hams and mystery meats for the rest of the group to try a little later on during the tour. Whilst the tour can be adapted for vegetarians, it's noted on the website that they do not cater for vegans.

The next stop however was the one I was looking forward to the most - the cheese shop! We journeyed towards the quaint little cheese haven, La Butte Fromagère (32 Rue des Abbesses, 75018 Paris), where we gazed longingly at the cheeses beneath the glass cases and sampled some creamy "Tome Caussonard" - a sheep's milk cheese from the Pyrénées. It was deliciously creamy and that sample had my stomach ready to consume a whole lot more cheese!

Emma then told us a little more about the process of creating cheese in France and the fact there are thousands of different cheese combinations in shops across Paris, so it would be a 'tough' job sampling them all. If I lived in Paris, then I'm certain I would try my best to sample each and every one.

A stop-off at Chocolat Illèné

Our next stop was Chocolat Illèné (2-4 Rue Tholozé, 75018 Paris, France), a chocolatiers that blends a fusion of French sweet treats with Korean tastes. The chocolate shop is owned by two friends, Hyunsoo and Jin, with a Korean background who ditched their careers in chemistry and immunology to pursue their dream of opening a chocolate and pastry shop in France.

The front of the store showcases an awe-inspiring tower of colourful macarons in the window that could pass as an extraordinary piece of art on its own. Inside we browsed the incredible collection of macarons and chocolates before selecting a few to taste and takeaway. The chocolates were so good that James and I have promised ourselves that we'll re-visit next time we're in Paris!

Secret Food Tours Montmartre Review

Our next stop on the tour was Boulangerie Alexine (40 Rue Lepic, 75018 Paris) to pick up a few baguettes to accompany our meal. Emma also picked up a cheese & tomato tart and a cheese & leek quiche for James and me as we wouldn't be eating the meat. This little touch meant we didn't miss out on food when everyone else was sampling the meats during the tasting at the end of the tour.

With all of our freshly bought produce we headed to a small little bar where there was some reserved seating for us to set up and begin tasting the food we'd picked up. We tasted six more cheeses, including the strongest and smelliest cheese I've ever encountered (it wasn't actually that bad, but it smelt like a barn!). We spent around two hours or so tasting a heck of a lot of food paired with a fair amount of wine until the point that all of us were clutching our well-tended to stomaches and moaning about how we couldn't possibly eat anything else... well, that was until Emma surprised us with traditional sweet crêpes from the shop next door. Somehow, I found the room in the pit of my stomach to devour an entire crêpe with a Lotus Biscoff spread.

Throughout the tasting Emma guided us with tips on how to taste and how to shop for certain foods and wines whilst in Paris. We actually took away some tips on how to shop for better quality wines and practiced them throughout the rest of our trip. Of course I'm not going to share these secrets because for that you'll have to book yourself onto a tour!

The Secret Food Tour was something a little different from the usual tourist activities that you would usually partake in when visiting a new city and if you're someone travelling to experience and learn a little more about the French cuisine whilst in Paris, then I highly recommend booking with Secret Food Tours. Prices start at 89€ per person and run 7 days a week, but due to the small tour groups they do get booked up fast!
