Where to Stay in Gdańsk | Hotel Hanza

As part of my '12 Cities in 12 Months' mission, I headed on a slightly spontaneous trip to Gdańsk in Poland simply because the flights were cheap and we had heard that the beers were cheap too (a very important factor). I hadn't really researched too much into the city other than a quick Google Image search of the gorgeous narrow, pastel townhouses that lined the cobbled streets. Poland had never really been high on my 'to visit' list, but the affordable beer and Instagram-worthy location sold it to me pretty quickly.

During our 3-day trip we spent one of our nights at the 4-star Hotel Hanza located smack bang in the centre of the city.

Location

As I mentioned before, the hotel itself is located smack bang in the middle of the main town as it sits alongside the Motława river and next door to one of Gdańsk's most notable landmarks - the Crane & National Maritime Museum. The main entrance to the hotel, however, is located on the street parallel to the waterfront so once you're at the water, you simply have to pass underneath the Crane and turn right to find the entrance. If you're arriving to the city by train then the hotel is around a 20-minute walk from Gdańsk Główny train station. There are a number of bars and restaurants less than a minute's walk away and most the main town's sights can be reached in 15 minutes or so. In terms of location, the hotel is idyllic for those who want to explore the beautiful, medieval city by foot.

The Room

As I was travelling with a pal, we booked a twin room so we could selfishly enjoy an entire bed each. The beds themselves were slightly wider than a traditional single bed, which meant plenty of room for star-fishing and they were so comfortable that I didn't stir once overnight, which is usually unheard of. The huge, heavy blackout curtains also aided my incredible night's sleep and almost led to me oversleeping - whoops! Admittedly, this could have also been down to a combination of the strong Polish beer and the fluffy pillows but the main thing is that I had a decent night's sleep, which is essential when on a city break. Also, despite the hotel being located in the main town, it was still quiet in the streets which meant no disturbances throughout the night.

The room was absolutely huge and the decor is sleek and chic with hints of blue and a striking grey tartan carpet that runs throughout the hotel. A huge black & white photographic mural of Gdańsk's famous Neptune's Fountain and the typical architecture of the town graces the wall behind the beds, which is a nice reminder of what's on your doorstep to explore. The room comes with a small LCD TV, minibar and a couple of chairs with a table next to the window.

The bathroom was immaculately clean when we arrived and contained a bath as well as a shower. All of the rooms also offer room service but unfortunately we didn't get the opportunity to try this.

Breakfast & other services

The breakfast buffet in the morning had an extensive choice, even for a vegetarian like me. I filled my plate a selection of cheeses, fresh fruits, pastries and salad before going back to try some of the cakes they had on offer! They had a delicious pistachio cake on offer that I will honestly remember fondly whenever I reflect back on my time in Gdańsk. After breakfast finishes and the area is cleared, it opens up into a fish restaurant, Zafishowani, but obviously as a non fish-eater cannot pass judgement on this.

Within the hotel there are spa and a gym facilities where you can book a wider range of treatments including acupuncture, massages and beauty treatments. Unfortunately we didn't have a chance to check these out during our stay but it's nice to know there's the option to go back and book in for a treatment after a long day of exploring. After we checked out of our room (check out time is noon) the staff were more than happy to let us leave our luggage in storage, which is always appreciated when I have a late return flight.

The Hotel Hanza is the ideal booking for a city or business tripper due to its convenient location and top notch amenities. Although we stayed only a night, I'd feel comfortable staying there for a few nights as the room itself is so spacious and feels incredibly homely. If you're planning on visiting Gdańsk - which you absolutely should because it's beautiful - then do consider staying at the Hotel Hanza. Rooms start from 290 zloty (approximately £61) per night.
