S T Y L E | Monarch Airlines Cabin Crew Uniforms Through The Ages

01 December, 2015
Doesn't every little girl dream of being an air steward at some point?

Well, I certainly did. I mean who wouldn't dream of a job that takes them across the world every working day? It sure does beat the 9 - 5 grind in the office staring into a computer screen. Being an air steward you get so many experiences and opportunities: globe-trotting adventures, new lands to explore, beaches to spend your breaks on, flying from different airports (I have a thing with airports, you see) and don't even get me started on the incredible uniforms! Travelling the world whilst wearing a head-to-toe, glamorous outfit? Count me in.

Monarch Airlines Sketches

Monarch Airlines have recently been getting a little nostalgic whilst reminiscing on their cabin crew wear throughout the years. They also challenged me to come up with my own #FashionForwardFlightwear ideas, which certainly got my creative juices flowing a little!

I'm not particularly subtle when it comes to everyday wear, so I wasn't planning to be subtle when it came to sketching some ideas for Monarch's flight wear; in fact, the more inappropriate and adventurous, the better! I wanted the colour scheme to reflect Monarch's regal branding by sticking to a colour scheme of royal blue and golden yellow. Whilst purple is quite a regal colour, I wanted a tone that was more gender neutral for a possible male uniform so I opted for royal blue instead.

The cape was inspired by the 1968 uniform (below) that featured a cape, but I decided to build upon the idea a little. I used the golden yellow tone for the base, but decided to add an embroidered, all over 'M' monogram. I then added a faux fur trim on both the neck and the hem, well... just because it looks a little more glamorous! I then topped it off with a navy, matching baker boy hat to add to the sixties inspired get-up. What do you think?

  1. Oh my god, I love those sketches girl. You've made it look so bloody funky! I have to admit when I worked for Thomsons & I had their uniform, the dress and nicky tie always made me feel so special and it gave me a reason to get up, to go to work in a sassy uniform!
