Review | Alexandrie Restaurant, London

22 November, 2017

The Alexandrie is an intimate restaurant located in the heart of Kensington, but with so many restaurants in the surrounding area it's easy for this quaint little establishment to be missed. The elegant restaurant, which spans across two floors, specialises in Egyptian-inspired cuisine with influences from France, Greece and Italy. They also offer a a number of vegan options, which are clearly marked on the menu.

We arrived for our reservation at 6:30pm on a Sunday evening and the restaurant, which is a 10-minute walk from Notting Hill Gate tube station, was quiet with only one other family dining at the same time. It was unusual but it was so tranquil and quiet that it was a welcomed change of setting for an evening in London. The upstairs arrangement is small and intimate and almost feels as if you have stepped into someone's home rather than a restaurant in the heart of west London whilst the downstairs space boasts a huge bar with a hidden party venue.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted with a plate of houmous, baba ghanoush, homemade flatbread & a side salad of aubergine, peppers and garlic alongside our bottle of white wine. The creamy houmous and baba ghanoush were utterly delicious and I found myself scooping up as much of the leftovers as possible.

The menu itself clearly marks any dishes that are suitable for vegans, vegetarians or gluten-free with it's clear key indicator. It was great to be able to see quickly and clearly which dishes were suitable for our dietary needs.

To start, I ordered the red lentil velouté with za'atar croutons and James opted for the molokheya, which is a traditional viscous herb soup, served with rice and a cup of vinegar to add according to personal preference. It was only afterwards I found out that you're supposed to eat the molokheya by scooping up a spoonful of rice and dipping it in the soup as you go. However, as James and I were accustomed to this traditional, we simply opted for emptying the contents of the rice bowl into the soup - whoops! The soup itself isn't for everyone as the texture is quite thick and slimy, but this is the nature of mulukhiyah leaves when they are cooked. The red lentil soup was thick and wholesome, however I did personally find it a little bit bland.

For our main course, we both opted for the vegan option of traditional oven-baked okra (bamia) served in a coriander sauce with three rounded pitta breads each. Bamia is traditionally baked with lamb or beef, but Alexandrie's offering is completely vegan and meat-free. We also ordered a side of sautéed cauliflower with garlic and red chilli and fatta rice, which is mixed with pieces of fried bread and marinated in a light vinegar and garlic. The flavours from the main courses stood out a lot more than the lentil soup that I'd had for my starting course and I would thoroughly recommend the oven-baked okra if you were to visit.

Although we were pretty stuffed by this point, there was no way that we were planning to leave without trying the dessert menu so we ordered the Om Ali, which is a crisp filo pastry, baked in a rich cream with a touch of vanilla, topped with baked almond flakes and the baklava served with pistachio ice-cream. Both desserts were incredibly sweet and the baklava is complimented by the pistachio ice-cream perfectly.

The service from the staff at Alexandrie is exceptional and we found them to be incredibly attentive, which made the entire experience all the more special. The cosy setting, exquisite food and extensive wine list makes it the ideal location for a date night in the west of the city. However, it shouldn't be ruled out for a family or group as the other diners in the restaurant at the same time had a couple of young children who the staff catered to attentively as well.

Review | The Stable's Vegan Menu & Cider Tasting Experience

19 November, 2017
The rustic yet modern decor of The Stable in Whitechapel
The vegan menu at The Stable
The Stable is a pizza, pie & cider specialist with a number of restaurants dotted around the UK. My first ever experience with The Stable was at the beginning of last year when I attended an event at their Winchester venue, whilst I was still living in Hampshire. Back then I was eating meat but now I'm at the transition stage between a vegetarian and vegan diet, so I was really enthusiastic to be invited back to their Whitechapel branch to taste their vegan menu and experience a personal cider tasting session with their in-house 'Cider Master'. I mean, is there any cooler job title out there than a 'Cider Master'? Probably not.

The Stable are pretty serious about cider and the Whitechapel branch serves over 80 different ciders to their customers, which are also personally selected by the instore Cider Master. Their cider tasting experiences allow customers to up their cider knowledge whilst sipping on some of the drinks that the restaurant has to offer. Our Cider Master, Joe from the Whitechapel, guided us through a tasting board of ten different, and totally vegan, ciders. During the tasting he thoroughly explained the process of making cider and how we could identify type of cider from another.

The tasting experience takes you through a wide range of ciders from the popular, elegant sparkling ciders to the classic, full-bodied, traditional scrumpy ciders and you'll even get to sample The Stable's own brew, 'Rapscallion'. I personally tend to drink the flavoured, fruity and sparkling ciders (Älska are my favourite vegan, sparkly cider brand, FYI, because a couple of other popular fruity cider brands that you may have heard of aren't vegetarian-friendly) and I have tended to steer clear of more traditional ciders. I put this down to myself drinking one too many bottles of Strongbow in the park during my teenage years and having always associated scrumpy ciders to those days. However, I was surprised to discover that my two favourite drinks on the board of ten were the still, traditional ciders including a matured, oak-aged cider that had notes of vanilla. Vanilla is a taste I never expected from a cider tasting, but how wrong I was!

Vegan pizza selection from The Stable
A selection of every vegan pizza option available on the menu
Throughout the cider tasting we were also treated to tasting The Stable's vegan menu with a 'cheesy' sharing garlic bread for starters, a selection of their vegan pizzas for mains and their indulgent vegan brownie as dessert. Vegan cheese is often 'hit or miss' for me as I find a lot of vegan cheese tends to taste really artificial and I often can't stomach it. The Stable use Bute Island mozzarella for their vegan pizza bases and I'm gonna put it out there - it actually tastes better than standard mozzarella!

We had two pizzas between us but split the toppings in half so that we could sample every vegan option on the menu: the 'One Potato, Two Potato', the 'Allo Aloha', the 'Bute Island Blazer' and the 'Hazel Nutter'. We both found it impossible to pick a favourite as every option was delicious, including the one with pineapple & avocado as a topping and I'm not usually a pineapple on pizza kinda gal. The Bute Island Blazer is a little on spicy side, but we powered through it with our eyes streaming because it was too delicious to leave. As a huge fan of potato on pizza, the One Potato, Two Potato was a carb-addict's dream and the Hazel Nutter's adventurous combination of asparagus, chopped nuts and spinach was unlike any pizza I've ever tasted before.

Cider experiences at The Stable start from just £15 per head but increase in price if you want to add on pizzas and dessert. However, the full shebang only costs £30 per head which is pretty reasonable considering how much cider and food you'll get to taste and they can cater to vegans - hurrah! The experience is the perfect gift for a cider head or a unique, affordable experience for you and your pals on a Sunday afternoon.

Three Vegetarian & Vegan Food Stops in Ibiza

16 November, 2017
Passion Cafe Ibiza Review

Passion Cafe Ibiza Review
Passion Cafe
It's been a few months since I visited Ibiza but I've wanted to put together a little guide of the vegan stops we made during our short time on the island. Thanks to Ibiza's holistic and spiritual tendencies, there is quite a high demand for vegetarian and vegan food on the island, so if you are plant-based, you won't have any trouble finding somewhere to cater to your dietary needs.

Passion Cafe

Address: Edificio Punta de Mayol, Carrer Joan Tur Tur, 13, 07840 Santa Eulària des Riu, Islas Baleares, Spain

On our first day in Ibiza, we wanted to stay relatively close to our hotel in Es Canar, so upon Lauren's recommendation we drove to Passion Cafe in the nearby town of Santa Eulària. Passion is pretty well-known amongst regulars to the island and has six cafes across Ibiza, but the Santa Eulària eatery is sat right on the waterfront with a scatter of tables dotted around outside of the cafe where you can enjoy the sea view whilst enjoying your meal. The interiors of the cafe are very quaint and very shabby chic, with white wooden panelled walls and vintage decor. Like most establishments in Ibiza, the cafe is bright and welcoming with its doors thrown open to draw in the inevitable sunshine (because it's always sunny in Ibiza, right?).

Whilst their menu isn't strictly vegetarian and vegan, it is mostly plant-based, which makes a difference from the usual meat-dominated menus. Passion's focuses mainly on vegetarian, vegan, macrobiotic and raw cuisine. However, it isn't all grain bowls, salads and smoothies - although they do offer those if that's what floats your boat - but their menu is incredibly wholesome and they even have a selection of burgers available! I opted for their chilli tofu paired with quinoa salad, goat's cheese, avocado and sweet potato, which was absolutely delicious. A couple of the other girls ordered salads whilst Lauren ordered the mighty vegan burger and they all confirmed that the other dishes were just as appetising!

It's the perfect spot if you're travelling in a group of mixed dietary needs and want some fresh, organic food that's bound to make your heart and your stomach feel full! If you do stop by Passion, make sure that you order the houmous for starters, because that houmous is sensational!

Out Of Time - Simbiosis

Simbiosis

Address: Calle Jaume I 2 | Plaze del Parque, 07800, Ibiza Town, Ibiza, Spain

The second food stop on our Ibizan adventure was Simbiosis (formerly named Out Of Time), which we retreated to after a long day walking around in the blazing hot heatwave, which was aptly named 'Lucifer'. Simbiosis a strictly vegetarian and vegan eatery with organic and fresh local produce that is located in the heart of Ibiza's beautiful Old Town. As we were absolutely ravenous at this point, we took a seat in the shade and scanned the menu furiously with rumbling stomaches.

Upon the recommendation of the guy who served us, we all decided upon a minty, pink lemonade which was exactly what we all needed to refresh and revitalise after battling with the unbearable heat all morning whilst trekking to Es Vedrà. Usually when I'm struggling with the heat, I'll tend to stick to light dishes but I was swayed by the sound of Simbiosis' own vegan burger with vegan cheese and boy oh boy, am I glad that I made that decision! My body was definitely craving the carbs at that moment in time and the burger was exactly what my body needed. Some vegan burgers can be a little questionable (a big mushroom in a bun is not a burger, fyi), but Simbiosis' vegan burger was absolutely incredible!

Can Domingo

Address: Carretera Ibiza-San Josep, Km 9,8, 07830 Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Illes Balears, Spain

On our final evening we decided to treat ourselves to a slightly more ~fancy~ meal, so we took a drive to the remote Italian restaurant, Can Domingo. To this day I still proclaim as one of the most typically romantic restaurants I've ever been to! The restaurant itself is tucked away along a dirt road in the rolling hills of the island and the garden looks out to the most spectacular Ibizan rural landscape. The restaurant itself is within a typical Ibizan finca rather than a typical restaurant setting, so walking into it feels a lot more intimate and homely. As someone who has grown up in the city, it was refreshing to experience something so far from the restaurant settings in London.

Whilst the menu at Can Domingo isn't exclusively vegetarian or vegan, it does offer a decent selection of plant-based options, which is rather rare for a traditional Italian restaurant. I had their homemade vegan tagliatelle with saffron, carrot and cardamom cream grated with lemon zest and homegrown herbs.  It's also worth mentioning that they also have a pretty persuasive vegan chocolate cake on the dessert menu too!

Do you have any recommendations for vegetarian or vegan food stops in Ibiza?

Where To Stay In Berlin | Hampton by Hilton, Alexanderplatz

08 November, 2017
Hampton by Hilton, Alexanderplatz Berlin Review
Hampton by Hilton, Alexanderplatz Berlin Review
Hampton by Hilton, Alexanderplatz Berlin Review

Oh, Berlin. The German capital is one of my favourite cities in Europe, but deciding on where to stay if you're heading there for the first time can be a tad overwhelming. I mean the city itself is huge as it is home to nearly 3.5 million people and has hosted over 31 million visitors over the past year alone. If you're heading to Berlin for the first time, a central location hotel with good transport links is important until you get to grips with the city. During my recent visit to Berlin with the Chamäleon Theatre, I stayed at the Hampton By Hilton hotel, which is just a stone's throw from Berlin's Alexanderplatz.

Before my recent trip to Berlin, I had never actually stayed in any form of Hilton hotel before during my travels, so this was a first for me! The Berlin hotel happens to be relatively new, having only opened in May 2017, and is the world's largest Hampton By Hilton property boasting 344 rooms.

Location

The location of the hotel couldn't be any more convenient for a first-time traveler to Berlin as it's tucked just behind Berlin's famous Alexanderplatz square in the city centre. It's surrounded by some of the city's most famous and notable attractions including the TV Tower, the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island, which are all within easy walking distance. Whilst the hotel isn't directly on the Alexanderplatz square itself, it's located a few streets behind meaning it's tucked away from the crowds and the noise which can get a little hectic during busy periods. It's also less than a 10-minute walk from the metro station and there's a tram stop located directly outside, so the hotel is easily accessible for tourists who want to explore the rest of the city.

The Room

I'm not entirely sure what time check-in is at the Hampton by Hilton Berlin, but I arrived a little after midday and was allowed to check in straight away, which was very much appreciated as I had been awake since 3am to catch my flight. Whilst the rooms aren't pretty simple in terms of visual aesthetic, they're relatively spacious and functional. Most importantly, the bed was extremely comfortable with huge pillows that was perfectly to crawl into after a long day roaming the streets of Berlin.

The bathrooms are bright, clean and the shower was easily adjustable in terms of both temperature and pressure. The amenities in the room include toiletries (which was handy considering I did actually forget my shower gel), tea and coffee making facilities, free wifi, laundry service, a 40-inch smart TV and a large workspace. Although I was by myself, the room is a perfect size for either a couple visiting the city or someone on a business trip.

The windows are full-length, letting a lot of natural light into the room and mine was facing another pastel pink building and looked over a courtyard. Whilst the building opposite may feel a little invasive, there's the option to pull across some net curtains and as well as some 'black out' curtains.

Food & other services

Every booking at the Hampton By Hilton hotel includes a complimentary breakfast from their buffet, which is served every morning in the ground floor dining area. They have taken into account the number of guests that will be at breakfast as the dining area is absolutely huge and I easily managed to find myself a table during their peak hours on a Sunday. The breakfast offers everything from to cereal to fresh fruit to some more continental choices. As a self-confessed enthusiast of hotel breakfast buffets, I was pretty excited to see that the Hampton By Hilton breakfast selection even includes a waffle press where you can make your own fresh waffles topped with sprinkles!

Whilst there's no dinner menu in the hotel, it does offer a 24/7 option of snacks and drinks at the bar just near to the reception. However, if you are feeling peckish outside of the breakfast hours, there are plenty of food options right on your doorstep and within walking distance - I personally recommend Lily Burger, which is around a 10-minute walk away from the hotel and serves up the filthiest vegan burger I've ever tasted!

The hotel also offers a fitness centre for guests, which includes cardio equipment and a selection of weights. I actually only found out about this additional amenity after my trip, so I didn't actually get to see or use the gym. However, I did only stay the one night and was feeling a little worse for wear on the Sunday morning, so even if I had realised there was a gym available to use, I would have still probably have given it a miss.

Throughout my stay, all of the staff that I encountered were incredibly helpful, considerate and kind. I was particularly grateful for the luggage storage facility that the hotel offers, which meant that I could leave my bag at the hotel after I checked out in the morning and was able to pick it up in the evening before my late night flight.

Prices for the Hampton by Hilton Berlin start from just €79 for a double room and can be booked online here.

Review | The Diner Vegetarian & Vegan Menu

05 November, 2017
The Diner Vegetarian & Vegan Menu Review
The Diner Vegetarian & Vegan Menu Review
The Diner Vegetarian & Vegan Menu Review

It's a bloomin' great time for vegans and veggies alike in London right now as there are new vegan joints and menus appearing all over the city. One of the ones that I was most excited about was the introduction of The Diner's vegetarian and vegan menu. I reviewed a few of The Diner's vegetarian options back at the start of the year, but none of the options we tasted then were vegan back then so I was keen to test out their new, extended menu.

The menu is currently only available at the Islington and The Strand branches, so if you're a burger hungry vegan in London then you're in luck! We dropped by the Islington branch on a Sunday afternoon ready to feast upon as much plant-based dirty food as we could handle. The menu itself covers both a range of breakfast and brunch dishes to typical American-inspired junk food. We ordered a selection of dishes including The Diner Vegan Burger, Vegan Mac 'n' Cheese, Southern Fried Seitan, Hanger Fries (vegetarian, non-vegan) and the Freakshow Seitan. However, whilst all of this sounds absolutely heavenly and incredibly indulgent, unfortunately some of the dishes we ordered weren't so great.

Let's start with the good though, because despite being disappointed with a few of the dishes, a few of the others made up for it! The Diner Vegan Burger is almost exactly the same as their vegetarian option but takeaway the cheese and replace it with guacamole and a little Franks hot sauce instead. As a self-confessed enthusiast for both guacamole and Frank's hot sauce, I very much approve of this combination. The patty itself seems to be identical to their vegetarian one and is unlike any other veg-based burger I've tasted before as the taste resembles sage & onion stuffing more than anything else, but it's delicious!

Vegan cheese alternatives can really be hit or miss, but The Diner's Vegan Mac 'n' Cheese is pretty effin' great! I mean, I love a mean mac 'n' cheese and this vegan alternative, which you can choose as main or a side, really is moresome. It's so good that even non-vegan pals would appreciate it!

Unfortunately, the two dishes that we both didn't enjoy were the Southern Fried Seitan and the Freakshow Seitan. Now, I've been singing seitan's praises ever since I first tasted it and I've even bigged it up to meat-eaters as a 'must try' because it's such an uncanny replacement for certain types of meat. As soon as I spotted it on the new menu, I knew that I absolutely had to taste it, because I've not had a bad experience with seitan before. Unfortunately, we both really, really disliked The Diner's seitan offering and couldn't eat either of the dishes. My issue with it was that the seitan was far too thick, stodgy and inedible. Although, I've never cooked with it myself so my comment may be misguided, but it just wasn't cooked too well - there's so much that you can do with seitan, but it just seemed as if it was cut up in thick chunks and deep-fried in breadcrumbs. Considering I've been banging onto to everyone, including meat-eaters, the past few months about how great seitan is and if I first introduced them to it through these dishes I just don't think they do the meat alternative justice at all. The Freakshow Seitan came with a little pot of Frank's hot sauce and the Southern Fried Seitan came with some waffles, syrup, onion rings, slaw and a selection of fruit.

The staff at The Diner Islington did ask for our honest opinion on the dishes and we did give our feedback on the seitan dishes, which was passed on. It's still early days for their new vegan & veggie menu, so I'm hoping that they do develop the seitan recipe further. It's so wonderful to see a restaurant brand that thrives on the reputation of their meat-based menu extending their vegan and vegetarian options for a plant-based customer base.

I would still recommend checking out the new menu at The Diner as the menu is so huge that there's plenty to choose from; I mean, I didn't even have a chance to try out the huge selection of vegan pancakes available! I would even recommend you try out the seitan, because what I may dislike, someone else may enjoy.

Have you tried The Diner's new vegan & vegetarian menu before? If so, what did you think?

Review | Backyard Cinema Snow Kingdom, London + Win a Pair of Tickets!

Backyard Cinema Snow Kingdom, London Review

You may have seen across my social media channels that I have visited the Backyard Cinema a few times since the start of the summer, because I've been lucky enough to become one of their official Backyard Cinema bloggers. If you haven't heard of them before, the concept of the Backyard Cinema is to provide an alternative cinema experience for its customers, which it provides through its ever-changing themes. It's a roaming cinema that pop-ups at multiple events and venues across London as well as recently having secured a more permanent home in Borough. Every few months the cinema switches up its narrative; in the summer it was 'Miami Beach' and now it has transformed into the enchanted Snow Kingdom for the winter season. I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to experience it in all its captivating glory at the private launch last week.

The cinema itself is located a short walk from Borough station and is nestled within the Mercato Metropolitano Italian street food market, which is lined with multiple Italian food kiosks. There is plenty to choose from including some incredible wood-oven baked pizzas (I can vouch for them - they're delicious!), sweet treats and even a gluten-free stall. If you're planning on catching a film at the Backyard Cinema then you should definitely arrive a bit earlier and grab a bite to eat at the market beforehand!

You can't miss the cinema's entrance as it's a pretty extravagant fairytale-esque castle, but just in case you do somehow miss it, it's located in the right-hand corner as you enter the food court. After grabbing your ticket and any food or drink tokens you may have purchased at the box office you'll be greeted by one of the team at Backyard Cinema who will hand you a jar filled with Pinterest-perfect fairylights, which will help guide your way through the magical entrance before you reach the screening room. After ducking through the tunnel-like entrance, and being warned not to hit my head yet *still* hitting my head straight away, you'll encounter an ice cave with wooden footbridge that leads you across a frozen lake with explorer-themed artefacts dotted around. It's literally like stepping into a fairytale set up and you instantly forget that you're in south London!

After making your way across the bridge and through the wooden door, you'll step into the screening room which is reminiscent of a magical castle with Snow Kingdom emblemed drapes hanging from the walls and beanbags dotted around in front of the screen. I can't even begin to explain just how comfortable the beanbags are and they make such a welcomed change for the usual stiff traditional cinema seats. To suit the Snow Kingdom theme, a few new cocktails infused with sparkling edible glitter have been added to the menu; I opted for the Toxic Apple option and it was so, so delicious! As the winter draws in, the Backyard Cinema is the perfect night out in London as you can snuggle up undercover in front of a film in an imaginative and completely immersive setting. The guys and gals at Backyard are really changing up the idea of 'just going to the cinema' and making it so much more.

The Backyard Cinema Snow Kingdom is showing a range of classic films for the winter months from Beauty & The Beast to Bridget Jones to Cool Runnings and it's open until January 7th 2018. You can view the full upcoming listings here.

The team at Backyard Cinema have also offered a date night package for one lucky reader that includes a pair of tickets to a film of their choice (subject to availability), some bubbly & snacks to enjoy throughout the film. To enter, simply follow all of the steps in the Rafflecopter widget in this post. Good luck!
