The Hair Growth Diaries | Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo

25 March, 2014

Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo: Boots, £5.49

Anyone who knows me will know my obsession with my willing my hair to grow faster than it's natural snail pace. I'm not particularly drawn in my many beauty fads or must-buys. In fact, when it boils down to it I'm an awful girl. I've been faithful to the same make-up routine since I was about 15 years old with a few additions thrown in. My hair however is a completely different story. I am always spending money on remedies, lotions and potions to try and persuade it to grow into the luscious mermaid locks of my dreams. I am not one of those people whose hair grows at an extraordinary rate and is forever complaining about how frequently they have to have it cut (STOP COMPLAINING, by the way). My sister was the one who was born with those miraculous hair growing genes as she could have her hair cut considerably shorter than mine and it still will have outgrown my limp locks after just six months. A blessing I have always been envious of!

In my constant battle with my hair I thought I would begin to record it's growth with the help of any hair growth remedies out there with the aim to distinguish those that actually work over those that are either old wive's tales or fall through on their claim. In September of last year I decided to stop dying my hair in order to grow out my roots and natural colour with the aim to help the condition of my hair in order for it to grow quicker. My roots have helped me track the progress of the growth a lot easier. It had actually got to around February when I realised my roots had only grown about half an inch since September! Half an inch in three months! It was then I decided I needed a little help to speed up the process and came up with the idea of this feature on 'Fox & Feather'.

The first number on my hair growth trials was Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo, which you can pick up in Boots for £5.49. This shampoo is actually aimed at men with hair loss and contains caffeine that is supposed to stimulate hair growth directly at the roots. Although I'm not losing my hair I figured it's aim was pretty much the same as what I'm after and if it made my hair thicker then that's an added bonus! Alpecin claims that washing your hair daily with this shampoo it will immediately stimulate the roots after being left on the scalp for as little as 120 seconds, whilst if you leave it on longer more caffeine will be absorbed into the scalp. Alpecin is one of the few products I have never tried before hence I decided to give it a go first up on this series. I've been using it for almost two months now and although I don't wash my hair daily (2-3 times a week at most!) I've got to say I've noticed a huge difference in my hair growth. My hair has grown around two inches in those two months! That's double the average growth for hair and much, much faster than it was growing previously!

When washing I would leave it on for anything between 2-5 minutes dependent on how patient I was feeling. The only downside to Alpecin is the fact it really dries out your hair. Due to it being aimed at men it has no conditioning agents, which really does make your hair feel like absolute shit after washing it. This has meant having to usually condition it twice over after washing it and using a hell of a lot of hair oil. Another downside is the scent of the shampoo is quite masculine. However, this isn't a probably is you use a scented conditioner afterwards to cover up the smell. I've actually since been informed that there is a female range of Alpecin but I can't actually seem to find it anywhere, so if anyone does know hook a sister up! I've also recently invested in the Double Effect version, which I'll be trying out after this bottle runs out.

W I S H L I S T | Powder Blue Hue

21 March, 2014

1. // 2. // 3. // 4. // 5. // 6. // 7. // 8.

There's one colour I keep coming back to this season and that colour is powder blue. The most wonderful thing is that it seems to be everywhere at the moment too, from the high street to the online shopping world so the selection is huge! I've narrowed it down to a few of my favourites that I'm currently coveting for my wardrobe right now. Right at the top of this list is this beautiful cashmere, fringed jumper by Repeat Cashmere. Anyone knows I'm an absolute sucker for fringing and this cardigan is certainly no different. The fringing adds a bit more of a bohemian take on the pastel trend, which I absolutely adore!

Also included is this unintentional co-ord, faux leather set, biker style set from Zara, which I have tried on in-store recently and cannot stop thinking about. Powder blue softens the tougher leather biker look, making it a little more girly and appropriate for spring. The LOVE biker powder blue dress also follows this rule, which is perfect for people like myself who aren't particularly sure of girlier items. The visible silver, biker zip adds a bit of edge and tomboy style to the dress. The most unrealistic item from this wishlist (until I one day hit a big win on a scratchcard *fingers crossed*) is this delicious Michael Kors bag, which would sit perfectly with any of these other items I'm currently longingly lusting after.

O U T F I T | Pardon My Freedom

19 March, 2014

Jacket*: Minkpink c/o OUT + ABOUT
Sunglasses: Urban Outfitters
Tunic top: Charity Shop
Necklace: Topshop (maybe - can't actually remember!)
Shorts: Zara
Belt: Primark
Boots: Vagabond via Urban Outfitters

Yet another Minkpink item has graced my wardrobe for my ever-growing collection, and this time it comes in the form of this tribal-inspired, monochrome printed biker jacket. I wanted it pretty much as soon as it appeared on the Urban Outfitters website, but just didn't have the pennies to spare (when do I ever?!), so when OUT + ABOUT offered me an item from Minkpink's latest SS14 treats I knew exactly what to choose! It's not too heavy, which makes it's a perfect throw over little number for these warmer months. I also recently did an interview with OUT + ABOUT which you can read here if you fancy a gander.

How incredible is this change in weather? I've certainly been finding it easier to drag myself out of bed in the mornings now that the sun has been in the skies. It's rather cliché but the warmer weather does make my mood approximately 100x better. I've been getting up and going to sleep earlier, going to the gym and eating far cleaner, which is definitely helping me feel more energized! Fingers crossed I'm able to keep it up!

O U T F I T | Pink Fur & Rainbow Aviators

17 March, 2014

Fur gillet*: c/o Sammydress
Sunglasses: Primark
Top: eBay
Skirt: Peacocks (old)
Necklace: Primark
Shoes: Vagabond via Urban Outfitters

If any item of clothing makes you feel like you should be on the set of Almost Famous then you know it's a winner. That's the case with this shaggy, pink, faux fur gillet. Layered up over fringing and faux leather, I feel like I wouldn't be out of place hanging out backstage with Penny Lane & co. It was gifted to me from the team at Sammydress and I absolutely adore it. The dusty pink makes a change from the more natural and neutral colour faux fur gillets that are around on the high street. Plus, I'm noticing a little fondness developing for anything pink in colour, even though I've never been much of a girl. Maybe it's the change in season as I'm welcoming colour more and more onto my rails. You can pick this gillet up for just a little over a tenner here. TEN POUNDS. Crazy.

How bloody incredible are these rainbow aviators too?! They're current season Primark and only cost £2. I've got to confess I got a tad out of control on the Primark sunglasses selection at the moment and bought myself quite a few pairs. Let's hope the weather stays this wonderful so I can actually make use out of them!

O U T F I T | Sun, Moon & Stars

15 March, 2014

Dress: Motel (use code: 'leightravers' for 20% off)
Necklace*: c/o Lola&Grace
Jacket: MINKPINK via ASOS
Boots: Vagabond via Urban Outfitters

When this dress first hit the Motel website I adored it. I'm a bit of a sucker for anything sun, moon and stars print, whilst I also have a fondess for smock shaped dresses. So literally, this was perfect! Then I saw everyone owned it and it kept selling out. I hate to admit this, but I'm a bit of a snob and it actually put me off of the dress knowing absolutely everyone had it. But then I thought screw it, I absolutely love it, so who cares if everyone already has it?! I WANT IT. Then last week Motel were offering a 25% off of everything code for just 24 hours, so I finally caved in and bought it. I HAVE NO REGRETS IN THE WORLD. You can find the dress here and you can also get 20% off with the code: 'leightravers' when entered at the checkout!

This rose gold chain was a gift from lola&grace from when I took part in some filming for their #makethemoment campaign a few weeks back. I wear it almost daily! It's so wonderful to finally have a piece of jewellery that actually matches my rose gold MK watch! I can't stop buying clothes at the moment that I'm thinking I may have to put myself on a strict spending ban! Maybe I'll just turn up a little late to the Lent party?

O U T F I T | PVC & Caterpillar Boots

13 March, 2014

Top: ASOS
Trousers: Rihanna For River Island (similar here)
Necklace: Primark
Boots: Boot Sale

These trousers are far too cool to be gracing my legs. I'm still uncertain on them. Well, I'm not uncertain on them as much as I'm as uncertain as them on me. I recently mentioned them and my uncertainty on them in my first Youtube video haul here. Needless to say they are the noisiest trousers in the world. They squeak every time I move my legs, so pretty much all of the time! What else do I expect from a pair of joggers made from PVC though? So whilst not the most subtle and practical garment in the world (apart from being entirely splash-proof!), they were only £10 down from £50 so maybe I'll hang onto them for a little longer.

I was a little bit naughty and the ASOS 20% extra off of sale won me over a few weeks ago, which led to a few unnecessary purchases including this mesh cropped top. I already own about a million and one crop tops, but I do love me an orange and purple combination (entirely down to the fact it reminds me of Fudge chocolate bars).

Also, brace yourselves... I'm not wearing my trusty Vagabond boots for once! I had a pair of Caterpillar tan boots when I was a titch, at maybe 6 or 7 years old. I think my mum bought them because of them being such a sturdy, long-lasting boot, which I probably no doubt turned my nose up at. Recently though I've been feeling a little nostalgic and wanting a pair of their tan worker boots. However, in shoe shops I've been browsing they were priced at £100+, which really isn't fit for my budget right now. Last weekend I went to the local car boot sale and found the very pair I wanted in my size for £3! They were covered in quite a lot of dirt, but once I got them home and scrubbed off the dirt I found that they've hardly even been worn and are still in really good condition! Pretty darn chuffed about this little find!

R E V I E W | Muru Dreamcatcher Bracelet from Lulu Winter

12 March, 2014

Dreamcatcher Bracelet*: c/o Lulu Winter

I'm a little obsessed with dream catchers. I bought my first one a few years back from eBay and since then the collection has grown. I suppose it develops from my fascination around Native Americans concerning their history, culture and beliefs.

dreamcatcher (n.) 1. a Native American craftwork consisting of a small hoop covered with string, yarn, or horsehair mesh and decorated with feathers and beads and believed to give its owner good dreams.

So when Lulu Winter offered me a piece from their range of beautiful jewellery there was no other alternative in my mind other than this rose gold, dream catcher bracelet by Muru. Rose gold is my absolute favourite, but it's so difficult to come across in comparison to silver and gold so I really do excited when I find a piece of jewellery in rose gold that I love! This particular style is called the 'prosperity dreamcatcher, which is supposedly meant to bring wealth and good fortune. Wealth is something I could definitely use right now, so let's hope so! The pendant is central to a delicate gold chain with a clasp which rests on the underside of your wrist. The only problem I've had with this bracelet is that it's a little too big, but I have quite small wrists! I'm scared of it falling off whilst wearing it, so I think I'm going to have to take a few links out so it fits a little better. This shouldn't be too much of a problem if you have normal sized wrists, unlike myself.

E V E N T | VoucherCodes Swap Shop #VCSwapShop14

10 March, 2014

A few weeks back I headed back up to London for Voucher Codes' Blogger Swap Shop (#VCSwapShop14) and took my best gal pal, Harriet, along for the ride. We each took a total of five items with us which we traded in upon arrival for a set of stamps, which could be exchanged for other blogger's clothes that were on the rails. The number of stamps you received were dependent on the quality and brand of the item you traded in meaning you could receive up to 3 stamps per item! I must admit it was absolute chaos in the beginning with everybody filling their arms with clothes, so we gave up to take a break pretty quickly. After leaving it twenty minutes or so to grab a delicious cocktail (or three) we headed back upstairs to the swapping rails and it was much more calm! On our second round we managed to find much more stuff and I came away with some incredible pieces which included a Karen Millen beaded top, a floral Mod Dolly dress, a Jaegar red shirt, a faux leather fringed bag, an elephant smock dress and an unusual white wrap around blouse. I actually came away with more items than I traded in! Not particularly great for my wardrobe clear-out mission!

Also, on hand was the incredible Twistina who I cannot describe as anything else but an professional artist in the art of balloon modelling! I honestly believe she could make anything from twisting balloons! Of course I asked for a fox, which came on a headband with a dazzling LED light inside! It's been over a week now and my fox balloon hat is still going strong! Also, of course in typical blogger fashion we flocked to the photobooth and went a little bit overboard after everyone else had left. Thanks Voucher Codes for such a great night!
